Dermatologists Say This Is the Best Skincare Regimen for Oily Skin
Oily skin can be caused by a number of factors: genetics, diet, stress, and climate are a few. At its core, though, oily skin is the result of increased sebum production, which can lead to clogged and enlarged pores. So while a little extra shine might not be the bane of your existence, the change in your skin's texture isn't ideal. The good news is you can make skin appear less greasy by using the right products (and, of course, avoiding the wrong ones). To find out the ideal regimen for oily skin, we tapped top dermatologists Patricia Wexler, MD and Francesca Fusco, MD of Wexler Dermatology, and board-certified plastic surgeon Joseph Cruise, MD of Cruise Plastic Surgery.
Your New Routine
"For overall good skin health for your face, it's important to cleanse, tone, and use moisturizer daily," says Cruise. A common misconception with oily skin is that moisturizer isn't necessary and will make the skin even greasier. Not so, says Cruise. "By not applying enough moisturizer, you're causing the skin to overcompensate and produce more oil."
1 - Cleanser
For cleanser, Cruise recommends Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Facial Cleanser, which has a low dose of lactic acid—so it treats acne without irritating the skin. It also clears up blemishes without over-drying, leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth.
Adding a toner to your skincare regime is another good idea. Toners go a long way in preventing blemishes and oiliness, but you want to make sure you opt for a toner that can absorb oil and has antibacterial properties to take care of impurities and clear your pores out. Alcohol-free toner with active ingredients that restore the pH levels of your skin.
Cypress Oil - Has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties and is also an astringent. Give you the appearance of tightened pores and reduce the presence of excess sebum.
If you have oily skin, don’t skip your moisturizer! Reach for a face cream with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid for oily skin is a great way to train your skin to again produce just the right amount of oil for hydration. It allows oil glands to quit working overtime and give you the right amount of oil you need to keep that young and glowing radiance you desire.
When choosing a formula, Cruise says to look for ingredients that include glycerin and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and Grapeseed oil to help even out the skin tone. He also recommends a formula that is silicone-free so it won't clog pores.
Shea butter - absorbs quickly and contains fatty acids, Oils like shea butter are able to dissolve this stale oil thereby removing it. Also, shea butter is able to prevent oily skin by balancing sebum production. Sebum is the oil secreted by your glands to keep your skin moisturized. shea butter has a zero comedogenic rating.
Grapeseed oil - Grape Seed Oil is a light feeling oil that penetrates the skin quickly, leaving the skin soft and moisturized. It is mildly astringent, great for treating oily or acne-prone skin
Avocado oil - has extraordinary skin penetration abilities and can nourish different skin layers. It's a very rich, highly moisturizing emollient oil that makes the skin smooth and nourished. Thanks to its vitamin E content it also has some antioxidant properties
Cruise says anything particularly heavy and pore-clogging is a no-go for oily skin types. Steer clear of products that contain vegetable oil, coconut oil, petroleum jelly, and cocoa.
Fusco also warns against harsh scrubs, as these strip the skin's barrier and lead to increased oil production to help compensate.
